| Sarabeth's Central Park South 40 Central Park South (between 5th and 6th Aves.) | Sushi A G0-Go 1900 Broadway @ W. 63rd St. New York, NY 10023 (212)724-7340 Patron Allergic to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts. 2/18/09 Bud loved this place. It had a nice cozy neighborhood feel and the wait staff was terrific. We were in there at 11:15 p.m. and everyone was in a good mood. When informed of the food allergy situation, one of the chefs said that it was his pleasure to serve us. We felt very welcome and the food was tasty. |
Empire Hotel 44 W. 63rd St. New York, NY 10023 (212) 265-7400 2/23/09 Bud and I stayed here last week. It worked out ok, but there are a few cautions I must post. On the desk in our room we found a box full of items for sale including several different types of nuts. Alway a red flag for us. When I made the reservation, I requested feather-free bedding. We got in late, so it was 1a.m. when I realized there appeared to be a feather topper on the mattresses. We were too tired to call housekeeping, so Bud just slept on top of his comforter and there wasn't an allergy problem. In the hotel's defense, we did not end up in the original room they had prepared for us since there was a problem with the heater when we first checked in. Our room had a mini bar fridge stocked full of beverages. When I made the reservation, I was told that the hotel would empty the fridge and let us use it for our food if we were willing to pay an additional $50. Since we were there only one night I didn't bother. Instead, at midnight I removed a couple of bottles from the fridge and put our container of Silk in there for the night. That morning, I removed the Silk and put the hotel beverages back in the fridge. I'm very grateful to have refrigeration available whenever we travel.
Hilton Garden Inn New York/Chelsea 121 W. 28th St. NY, NY 1001-6102 (212) 564-2181 Bud was not here. 2/23/09 A close friend stayed here recently and told me all about it. This place is fairly new. The room came equipped with a refrigerator and microwave! I love when that happens! The rooms are non-smoking by floor and no pets allowed. There is some construction going on in the neighborhood. I plan to check it out next time I'm in Manhattan.

Better Burger (Chelsea) 178 8th Ave. @ 19th St. New York, NY (212)989-6688 3/7/09 Bud was not with us. Stopped in for a quick burger and fries and then spoke with Myrna, the manager. She told me they are well versed in food allergies and cross-contamination. She personally is allergic to macademia nuts, which are in some recipes, yet she eats there all the time. She encouraged me to thumb through their allergy notebook where they list all of their menu items and each ingredient. I was happy to find that their burger and hot dog buns are free of milk, egg and nuts (not sure about sesame). They use Applegate Farms hot dogs and bacon which are milk, egg, nut and nitrite free. These are the same ones we have used for years at home. She even said the fruit smoothies are not cross-contaminated with dairy from the milk smoothies. Like every other restaurant, they want to be alerted of a patrons allergies before they take the order. They have 2 more locations in NYC.

Unos Chicago Grill (Seaport) 89 South St. @ Fulton St. New York, NY (212) 791-7999 Unos Chicago Grill (Upper East Side) 220 E. 86th St. between 2nd Ave. and 3rd Ave. New York, NY 10028 (212) 472-5656 Unos Chicago Grill (Upper West Side) 432 Columbus Ave. @ W. 81st St. New York, NY 10024 (212) 595-4700 Unos Chicago Grill (West Village) 391 6th Ave. between W. 8th and Waverly Place New York, NY 10014 (212) 242-5230 3/19/09 Just found a statement on their website that seems confusing alongside everything Kacey, from their corporate office, told me. From www.unos.com: "If food allergen in question is not listed as an ingredient, please assume its inclusion is a result of possible contamination from either the processing, the equipment, or food preparation." 3/5/09 Talked to Kacey from the corporate office. She claims they have very extensive food allergy policies with one caveat: Peanuts are served in the bar area and are supposed to stay in the bar area but..... Sometimes patrons might carry some peanuts from the bar to the dining room. Patrons allergic to peanut should talk to the manager right away and the wait staff will wipe down the table a second time in an attempt to clear residual peanut residue. Unos wants all patrons to have a pleasant dining experience. Unos wants us to start by asking for the manager since they are considered their resident food allergy "experts". Although all staff are trained in food allergies and cross-contamination, Unos does not want to leave anyone's health in the hands of just the wait-staff because of the turnover rate of such positions. All menu ingredients are available online, and they also offer a gluten-free menu. Kacey told me that the frequent requests from the gluten-free menu constantly require them to practice their safe food allergy handling procedures. 2/26/09 Was talking to a friend who worked at the Waltham, MA location in 2008. As a waitress, she was required to watch a video on food allergies. She said the kitchen was very strict about food allergy policies.
Bangkok House 360 W. 46th St. between 8th & 9th Ave. New York, NY (212) 541-5943 4/18/09 Patron allergic to milk, egg, peanut & tree nuts. Bud has safely dined here several times.
Aru Sushi 695 9th Ave. (between 47th & 48) New York, NY 10036 (212) 977-1777 8/6/09 Patron allergic to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts. I never thought the day would come that we could order takeout and delivery. Thanks to Aru Sushi, it has. Bud ate there in person before daring to order delivery. When ordering online, their website, PearlontheSushi.com, allows you to submit a comment regarding "special cooking request". 7/3/09 Patron allergic to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts. Bud and his friends thought this was the freshest sushi they've ever had. The wait staff and kitchen handled his food allergies without a glitch.
Worry-Free Dinners Website New York, NY 10/05/09 I do not have personal experience with the site's allergy friendly meals, but it looks like an interesting idea for people who live in or visit Manhattan. This is a website run by a woman who lives in NYC. She follows a gluten-free diet and also has multiple food allergies. She organizes meals at restaurants in Manhattan for people with food allergies and/or Celiac Disease, posts the date, time and location of the meal, as well as the menu.
