| Safeway Cannery Mall 1221 Honapiilani Hwy Lahaina, HI 96761 (808) 667-4392 1/25/10 This is a large grocery store and it is open 24 hours at the time of this post. It is just a few minutes drive from the Sheraton Maui. They carry Styrofoam coolers and bags of ice. Here are some of the items that appeared to be free of milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts: Hormel Natural Choice Roast Beef, Turkey and Ham. Deli brand Hard Salami and Genoa Salami. Hillshire Farms Roast Beef. Homel Beef Roast and Pot Roast. Tyson Beef Pot Roast in Gravy. Silk. Healthy Choice Steamers including Sesame Chicken and Turkey Breast. White Castle frozen hamburgers. | Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa 2605 Kaanapali Parkway Lahaina, HI 96761 (866) 716-8109 1/23/10 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. This “standard” room has a mini refrigerator. Microwaves are available to rent for $25 per day. The “Deluxe” rooms and the suites have a microwave in the room. We rented a car at the airport to get around the island. There are multiple convenience and grocery stores along the 45 minute ride from the airport in Kahului to the Sheraton. I wish we had picked up bottle water and groceries since the restaurants at the hotel were closed when we arrived at 10 pm. My hubby wished we had picked up beer! We found a convenience store in the hotel that had expensive water and yogurt. There was bottled water in the room for $5. (It was a big bottle) We stayed in “standard” room, 3402. We were offered a free upgrade to ocean view since it was late and there were a couple of rooms available. Room 3210 seemed musty, I requested to switch. Shanna, at the front desk, was very friendly and searched their massive database to find us a room on a higher floor. In my experience, higher floors seem less musty. 3402 seemed fine. Maybe it’s all the vegetation and lawn sprinklers closer to the lower floors. The first morning, we realized the hotel had provided us with 8 complimentary tickets (we were here 4 days) to breakfast at Keka’a Terrace Restaurant (see review on this page). Not sure if that was part of the upgrade, since I wasn’t expecting it. The buffet breakfast at Keka'a Terrace was wonderful. I talked to Sara, the manager, and learned that they are experienced with food allergies and cross-contamination. They don't expect people with food allergies to eat directly from the buffet due to possible cross-contamination. I also learned that the Sheraton security officers have Epi-pens available and are trained how to use them. Two or three officers are usually on the property and are accessible via radio carried by the many managers on the property. Sara is also trained on how to use an Epi- pen. Managers are usually trained within the first two months of their employment. Dialing “0” from any guest room sets the emergency response in motion. Simply tell the operator your situation. There is only one hospital on the island, in Kahului (airport also located there), so Sheraton has decided to be prepared for emergencies such as allergic reactions, bee stings, jelly fish stings, etc. When we originally booked the room, the offer was pay for 3 nights and get one free. We had enough Amex points to cover the 3 nights. So far, so good. |
| Duke’s Beach House On the Beach at Honua Kai 130 Kai Malina Parkway Lahaina, HI 96761 (808) 662-2900 1/24/10 Our son who is allergic to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. We ate outdoors in the casual dining area while a couple of local musicians provided entertainment. Duke’s also has a more formal dining room indoors. I spoke with Shaugn, the manager, after a fun and tasty dinner. Sean explained that they understand the importance of proper handling of food for individuals with food allergies. They have many food allergic patrons dine there during the year. Each member of the staff is provided food allergy training including cross- contamination. Shaugn happens to have similar personal experience with a family member who has to avoid shell fish. The chef works from an allergy notebook that contains the ingredients and allergy information for each recipe in the kitchen. The kitchen staff is very strict about what food is prepared where, to avoid cross- contamination. Each fryer is dedicated to certain food(s) to avoid cross- contamination from an allergy perspective as well as a taste perspective. Sean would love to hear from you via e-mail if you’re planning a trip to Maui. Duke's is a member of TS Restaurants. |
| ABC Store Whaler’s Village 2435 Kaanapali Parkway Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii 96761 (808)667-9700 1/24/10 ABC is a chain of convenience stores located throughout the islands. This one is close to the Sheraton Maui. We picked up a small Styrofoam cooler, ice, water and Ocean Potion suntan lotion. They stock vanilla Silk in the beverage cooler. They carry t-shirts, beach chairs, beach towels and other sundries. |
| Keka’a Terrace Restaurant at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa 2605 Kaanapali Parkway Lahaina, HI 96761 (808) 662-8053 or Ext. 38053 from within the resort. 1/24/10 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. I talked to Sara, the restaurant manager after a wonderful buffet breakfast. The restaurant staff is experienced in handling food allergies, celiac requests and kosher requests. And they understand cross- contamination. The Sheraton security officers have access to Epi-pens and are trained how to use them. Two or three officers are usually on the premises and are available via radio for such emergencies. Sara has been trained to use an Epi-pen. Sheraton Maui hotel managers are typically trained in the use of Epi-pens within the first two months of being a manager. The breakfast buffet was one of the best I’ve seen. The chefs are willing to prepare something special for guests with food allergies or other special dietary needs. The buffet included small boxes of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, and Raisin Bran. I saw whole oranges, apples, and bananas. Cut pineapple, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and watermelon are available. Meats included bacon, ham and sausage. The buffet included scrambled eggs, potatoes, french toast, raisins, and assorted pastries. |
| Hula Grill Kaanapali On Kaanapali Beach at Whalers Village 2435 Kaanapali Parkway, Bldg. P Lahaina, HI 96761 (808) 667-6636 1/24/10 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. We ate outdoors at Hula Grill’s Barefoot Bar. They also have a more formal dining room indoors. After a yummy lunch looking at the ocean, I talked to Will, the manager, about food allergies. He told me they have “really tightened up the program” regarding food allergies in the last couple of years. Everyone on staff receives training regarding food allergies and cross-contamination. They all know that one of the menu items containing macadamia nuts is used in a certain fryer so it should be avoided for patrons with tree nuts. They also will not use a pan that was previously used for a macadamia nut recipe to prepare the meal of someone who has tree nut allergy. Will suggested that patrons should tell their wait person about their food allergies. Then he/she will tell the manager who will talk to the chef and make sure the meal is handled properly. | Kimo's On Front Street in Old Lahainatown 845 Front Street, Suite A Lahaina, HI 96761 (808) 661-4811 1/25/10 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. After a relaxing dinner on the water’s edge at their casual outdoor dining room, we talked to Alex, the manager. There is also an indoor more formal dining area. The restaurant staff is trained in food allergies and cross-contamination. When a guest mentions food allergies to the wait person, the order is immediately flagged and brought to the attention of the manager. The manager brings the request to the chef, who in turn consults Kimo’s food allergy reference book to make sure there is something appropriate for the diner. In addition to food allergies, they also serve numerous people with celiac disease. If you have any questions before your visit, Alex would love to hear from you at AlexKimos@aol.com. He appreciates any advanced notice you can give him prior to your meal. Kimo’s is a member of TS Restaurants. |

| Cheeseburger in Paradise 811 Front Street in Old Lahainatown Lahaina, HI 96761-1607 (808) 661-4855 1/27/2010 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. I talked to the manager and he claimed that this would NOT be a safe place for someone with nut allergies. He said the bread and many of the items that go into the fryer are manufactured in a facility that processes tree nuts & peanuts. |
| Cool Cat Cafe 658 Front Street Lahaina, HI 96761-1265 (808) 667-0908 1/27/2010 I talked to the hostess before being seated and she indicated that they would not be able to handle the milk, egg, peanut and tree nut allergies. So, we decided to move on. |
