| Kauai Pasta 3-3142 Kuhio Highway Lihue, HI 96766 (808) 245-2227 2/5/10 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. It was quiet when we arrived at 3 p.m. so I had a chance to talk to Gino, the general manager, our waiter. He said they serve people with food allergies on a regular basis. They also serve many meals that are gluten free and vegetarian. He told me that my son would be able to eat the brown rice pasta with marinara or meat sauce. The chef would also be able to prepare a vegetable and meat or fish. This place started to fill up after we placed our order. It has a small dining room so there is usually a long line with a thirty minute wait at dinner time. I stopped by the next day to take a photo for the Food Allergies To Go Facebook page, and talked to the waitress on duty. She mentioned that they recently had an employee meeting to discuss the importance of keeping special dietary items like the brown rice pasta in stock. They know that patrons go there knowing that they can handle special dietary requests and they don't want to disappoint those patrons by being out of stock. | Kukui’s Restaurant at Marriott's Kaua'i Beach Club 3610 Rice Street, Kalapaki Beach Lihue, HI (808) 245-5050 2/6/10 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. I noticed that the bottom of every page on the menu stated “If you have any concerns regarding food allergies, please alert your server prior to ordering”. So, I inquired with the waitress. She told me that the chefs are very good with food allergies and avoiding cross-contamination. She advised that guests at the Marriott should tell the Marriott about the food allergies when making the hotel reservation. That way the hotel restaurants will make sure they have the proper ingredients on site to meet the dietary needs upon guest arrival. She used the example that they might bake gluten free muffins if they know that one of the guests is allergic to gluten. The waitress said they see peanut and dairy allergies frequently. It’s also important to tell the front desk about food allergies upon arrival, and to tell the restaurant when making a reservation. It’s always important to review food allergies with the server before ordering. |
| Marriott's Kaua'i Beach Club Kalapaki Beach (near Duke's & Cafe Portofino) 3610 Rice Street Lihue, HI (808) 245-5050 Room 2105, on the sixth floor was comfortable and clean. The dorm size refrigerator was clean. No freezer compartment in the fridge. This hotel has a food allergy friendly policy in place. They want patrons to notify them of food allergies and other special dietary needs when making the reservation. At check-in they want patrons to mention food allergies and special dietary needs to be sure that it was properly entered in their computer at time of reservation. And special dietary needs and food allergies should be emphasized with the wait person in their restaurants. Both their Kukui's restaurant and Toro- tei Sushi menus mention food allergies at the bottom of each page. If you decide to use room service, notice the In-Room dining menu states: “If you are concerned about food allergies, please alert your At Your Service agent prior to ordering.” Microwave ovens are available for guest rooms upon request. Place the request with your reservation and mention it to the front desk upon arrival. Food allergy friendly Cafe Portofino and Duke's are adjacent to the Marriott. |

I talked to the hostess and she said they serve people with food allergies all the time. Their menu has a note at the bottom of each page asking that you please notify your server if you have food allergies. |
| Keoki's Paradise On Poipu Road in the Poipu Shopping Village 2360 Kiahuna Plantation Drive Koloa, HI 96756 (808) 742-7534 2/4/10 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. I talked to Manette, the manager, while we waited for lunch at Keoki’s first floor casual dining area called the Bamboo Bar & Café. Both the Bamboo Bar & Café and the second floor more formal dining room are open for dinner. Anything cooked in the downstairs fryer is subject to cross- contamination by tree-nuts. During dinner, food can be prepared in the upstairs fryer for nut allergic patrons dining in the downstairs café. Keoki’s serves many patrons with food allergies. The chef’s are well versed in cross-contamination and will use a clean area in the kitchen to prepare food for individuals who need to avoid certain ingredients. Manette showed us their laminated allergy free lists from the kitchen. They have a list of menu items that are free of the major allergens. I looked at the list for nut free dining, milk free dining and egg free dining. In the case of our son, he would need to make sure that his menu choice shows up on all three of these lists. The laminated lists were a bit sticky from frequent use, so I washed my hands when I was done. Keoki’s Paradise is a member of TS Restaurants. |
| Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club 2249 Poipu Road Koloa - Kauai, HI 96756 (808) 742-4400 2/4/10 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. We stayed in room 1203, which is in Hale 1 on the second floor. This is an interesting place since most of the units are timeshare properties and only seven of the rooms are actual hotel rooms. The room was spacious and clean, but there was a moderate odor that might be some type of cleaning product or the new carpet. I didn’t notice it as much once we had the slider open and the ceiling fan running. It was noticeable the next day when we returned to the closed up room. I did notice the "do not disturb" sign was hanging from a bracelet that looked like it was made from polished nuts. There was a small refrigerator in the room. The inside of the fridge looked clean. The wild neighborhood roosters started crowing at three or four in the morning, but might have gone unnoticed had we closed our sliding door to the balcony. Our first afternoon we saw a Hawaiian Monk Seal on the beach behind the Marriott. It’s a protected species since there are only 1100 left in the world. There were also many people snorkeling in the water behind the hotel. After two nights, we decided to relocate to the Marriott Kauai Beach Club in Lihue since it was a busier area of the island. The Marriott Waiohai is very quiet on a quiet area of the island. It’s good if you like to sunbathe or watch your children playing in the sand. |

This place was quaint and adorable. Our cottage had a full kitchen and was clean and well kept. The inside of the refrigerator was very clean. |

I talked with Leinaala, the manager, while we waited for dinner. She said they have successfully served individuals with food allergies, but do not frequently get such requests. The chefs do understand food allergies and cross-contamination. Both their lunch and dinner menus are built around daily “specials” so it’s best to contact the restaurant early in the day to be sure they put aside a portion for you before it’s marinated or prepared with an ingredient you are allergic to. Our waitress was extremely friendly and patient while my sister and I decided what we would have for dinner. I requested the beef tenderloin special medium-well and it arrived at the table rare. Leilanaala quickly whisked it back to the kitchen. I am not much of a meat eater so this time I requested it be cooked until it was brown in the middle. It took awhile for it to arrive back at the table. It was slightly pink in the middle, but certainly tender and edible. I did notice pork chops and fish on the menu, but no chicken. Like most Hawaiian restaurants, there were menu items with macadamia nuts. |
| Cafe Portofino Kalapaki Beach (near Duke's & Marriott) 3481 Ho'olaule'a way Lihue, Kauai, HI 96766 (808) 245-2121 2/4/2010 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. I talked to Meredith, our waitress. She explained that Cafe Portofino has been under the ownership of Giuseppe Avocadi for twenty two years. Meredith told us that they serve many patrons with food allergies. Their linguini, spaghetti and penne are free of milk, egg, and nuts. Some of their pasta is made by DeCecco, which happens to be one of the brands we use at home. The pesto sauce has walnuts. The marinara sauce is free of milk, egg and nuts. The salad dressings all have egg, but they have oil and vinegar in it's place. The breads are not safe for someone with allergies to milk, egg, and nuts. Meredith invites food allergy patrons to request one of her tables. She even had some personal experience with food allergies as a child. |

Box 1988 3610 Rice Street Lihue, HI 96766 (808) 246-9599 2/1/2010 Our son with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts was NOT with us. We ate in the Barefoot Bar which is Duke's casual dining area on the water. They also have a more formal dining room indoors upstairs. I talked to Chris, the dining room manager. In the kitchen they have a big chart listing menu items and allergens. And they have a gluten free menu. The chefs understand cross-contamination. Chris explained that the macadamia nut wantons go in the fryer, so people with nut allergies should avoid Duke's fried menu items, including most of the appetizers. Chris found out the hard way that he is allergic to aspirin and ibuprofen, so he knows what it's like to be injected with epinephrine. He encouraged us to contact him the next time we travel to Kauai. Duke's is a member of TS Restaurants. |

Delmonte pears, peas, corn, peaches, and fruit cocktail. Love's Breads: Hawaii's Hearth Sour Dough, Whole Wheat, hamburger buns and bagels. Quaker microwave oatmeal, Rice Krispies, Corn Pops, Apple Jacks, Corn Flakes, Raisin Bran, Kraft marshmallows, frozen Lender's bagels. Oscar Mayer bologna, ham and coto salami. Styrofoam coolers and ice. |

They sell styrofoam coolers and several items that appear to be free of milk, egg and nuts including: Frozen Tyson Honey Breast Tenders, Plain Silk, Meadow Gold orange juice, Fritos bean dip, Fritos, Baked Lays, Campbell's Tomato Soup, Matador Beef Jerky, Sun Chips, Ruffles.
