Gallery One Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel 2670 East Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304 (954) 565-3800 1/23/09. Bud was not with us. Beware, complimentary hotel chocolate chip cookies have nuts in them. The suite was clean by most people's standards and had a fully equipped efficiency kitchen. If Bud had been with us I would have scooted across the street to CVS to buy some Lysol wipes to re-clean the kitchen surfaces (just to be sure).
Briny Irish Pub (Riverfront) 305 South Andrew Ave. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 (954) 376-4742 2/2/09. Bud was not with us. When I first asked the manager about food allergies, he told me that they have not had the request to serve a customer with food allergies in the two years that the pub has been under the current management. When I explained to him that I was putting together a website about food allergies and restaurants, he told me they could probably put something together for an individual with food allergies. Personally, I don't want them experimenting with a family member of mine until they have a better understanding of the risks and safety procedures.
Bonefish Grill 6282 North Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale, FL (954) 492-3266 1/24/09 Bud was not with us. This place had a line out the door with a 90 minute wait. Before dinner, I spoke to Tammy, the Maitre d' and she let me know that they do handle orders for people with food allergies. The food and service were very good.
P.F. Chang's China Bistro 2418 East Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304 (954) 565-5877 A patron periodically eats in Boston, MA location with allergies to milk, egg, peanut and tree nuts. 1/23/09. Bud was not with us. Our waitress and the manager told us they periodically serve patrons with food allergies and are trained to handle special dietary needs. They will use a clean Wok and prepare the order in a peanut free work area. Our waitress suggested putting the allergy information in writing to increase communication with the kitchen. It's a five minute walk from the Gallery One Double Tree Suites where we stayed.
Morton's Steak House 500 East Broward Blvd. @ Federal Highway (US 1) Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 (954) 467-9720 A patron has successfully dined at the Washington, D.C. location with allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, peas, beans, soy (but soybean oil ok). 1/24/09. We did not actually eat here. I talked to Steve, the Maitre d', and he claimed that they can handle food allergies. He explained that the food allergies should be described when making the reservation, and put in writing for the server (including cross-contamination) at time of order.
Whole Foods (grocery store) 2000 N. Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale, FL. (954) 565-5655 1/25/09. This was approximately 2.5 miles from the Gallery One Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel where we stayed. This is a full size organic grocery. Note to Bud: You might be able to eat the Whole Foods organic pita bread, and the Rudi's organic white bread.
Damon's Grill 4660 N. Ocean Dr. Lauderdale by -the- Sea, FL 33308 (954) 489-7544 1/24/09. Bud was not with us. I was greatly disappointed to learn that this is probably NOT a safe place for Bud. The interactive menu on their website is very slick and looks like they have a good understanding of food allergies, but our experience told us otherwise. According to our waitress, the chef was not there, the line cook did not want to come out and speak with us, and the manager was too busy to come over to our table, although there were only 4 other parties in the restaurant at the time. Allegedly, the line cook didn't know anything about food allergies, so the waitress suggested we go to their website and contact the corporate office. She told us she just wanted to do her job and go home at the end of her shift. We did not get the food allergy warm and fuzzies from this place! And I will contact the corporate office, but they probably won't be happy to learn what I have to tell them.
Riverside Hotel 620 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 1/23/09. Bud was not with us. I seriously considered staying here because it looked like the rooms had mini refrigerators and it was centrally located. I picked the Doubletree because it was less money and close to P.F. Chang's China Bistro. Riverside does seem closer to the business district than the Doubletree so it might be a good location for business travelers and people who like to be where the action is. We stopped by the Riverside while we were in town and talked to the manager. She and the staff seemed pleasant. She could not show us a room because the hotel was full (usually a good sign). She did tell us that the traditional style rooms were in their original condition, so I'm wondering if the "aged" environment might be tough for allergy noses. She did think the hotel's two restaurants would be able to serve people with food allergies. The menus seemed a bit expensive, but there are days when I'm willing to pay extra if my son is hungry and there aren't too many choices in site.
Chicken Kitchen 35 N. Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 (954) 832-9393 1/24/09. In my opinion, not a safe place for food allergies for us. I could see cross-contamination of condiments on the chicken cutting board and I could not communicate well because I speak English and they did not speak it well.
