I’m allergic to many raw fruits; I think the skin of the fruit is particularly offensive, so it may be related to the agricultural treatment. I particularly have reactions to raw apples, and to a lesser degree strawberries.

The primary symptom is a very noticeable swelling inside of the mouth. I’ve had a couple of more significant instances of breathing difficulty after eating raw apples. It took me a while to make the connection between the fruits and the reaction.

Fortunately, I am able to eat these fruits with no adverse reactions when they are cooked and/or processed, such as in apple pies and applesauce.

I’m also allergic to a lot of fruits because I have something called oral allergy syndrome. it is specifically problematic with uncooked fruits and vegetables. My allergist recommends taking Claritin before eating those items, making sure they are cooked (apple pie works for me but most apple juice doesn’t because it’s not processed enough), or just avoiding the fruits.

  3. Dave and Marni,
    Thanks for the insight.
